Preventive Maintenance Tips for your Vehicle

While we all certainly hope there will never be any reason to take our vehicle into the auto shop for any major repairs, it is a good idea to take it in from time to time for some routine and preventive maintenance to ensure it continues running well for a long time to come. Considering the expensive investment most of us make in our vehicles it only makes since to be sure it is properly maintained. Undertaking routine maintenance can help to prolong the life of your vehicle as well as lessen the chance of a breakdown and associated repair costs. The owner’s manual of your vehicle should have some basic information regarding when your vehicle should be taken in for regular maintenance; however, there are several preventive measures that should be handled regularly to get the most performance and efficiency out of your vehicle.

Your engine is one of the most important parts of your vehicle and as such should be treated accordingly. Before you take your vehicle out on a long trip be sure the oil levels are checked. You should also bring your vehicle in for the mechanic to check the engine any time the check engine line comes on. This could be a sign there is a serious problem. The engine oil should also be drained on a routine basis and the oil changes as well as the oil filters, fuel and air filters. The engine may also need to have the tension on the fan belt checked.

The cooling system is also important and should receive routine maintenance to make sure it does not overheat. Before summer arrives have your mechanic check the cooling system hoses. If the hose is cracked it should be replaced.
Ideally, the tanks on the fuel system should be checked once per year to be sure they are functioning properly. In addition, if you ever smell fuel while you are driving be aware this could be a sign of a defective fuel pump and the car should be brought in immediately to check for damage.

Be aware that many brake problems develop over a gradual period of time. By taking your vehicle in for routine maintenance you can rest assured that such problems will be discovered before they become too serious and therefore dangerous.

Of course, the tires should also receive attention on a routine basis to ensure the car performs safely and efficiently. Avoid mixing and matching different brands of tires. If you notice any problems with the steering of your vehicle, take it in to determine whether the tires may need to be aligned. Ideally, tires should be rotated every 3000 miles to make them last longer. Balancing the wheels can eliminate centrifugal force and a wobbling tire.

The electrical system is also crucial to the safe operation of your vehicle. Always make sure you have the electrical system checked by a trained auto electrician to be sure everything is working properly. Water levels should be checked on a frequent basis during the summer months.

Don’t forget to consult your owner’s manual to determine exactly when both major and minor services should be handled on your vehicle. Avoid the temptation to put off these repair and maintenance tasks. As a basic rule of thumb, plan to have the followed preventive maintenance performed:
• Every 3 months or 3000 miles:
o Have the vehicle serviced
o Check for proper lubrication
o Check battery, power steering, gear and transmission fluid levels
o Inspect fan belt, hosepipe and lights
o Rotate wheels
• Every year or 15,000 miles:
o Check tires and wheel alignment
o Check wheel bearings and the suspension system
o Check brake system
o Change transmission fluid
o Clean or replace air and fuel filters
o Check and lubricate door hinges and handles
o Check all rubber channels and linings. Replace if required
o Check wheel assembly. Get the rim and wheel assembly balanced if required
